Weekly Mid-Atlantic Fishing Report! - 4/28/16
The weekly Mid-Atlantic Sportsman fishing report is back! We will be posting this fishing report every Thursday and will try to incorporate the areas from New York down to Virginia.
Offshore Ocean:
The first tunas of the season have been brought in to the local inlets in the past couple weeks. As the warm water pushes further in and the winds become steady we should see an increasing number of reports from anglers running out to the blue water. I expect to see reports of bluefin and yellowfin coming in.
Shark fishing is right around the corner!
Inshore Ocean:
Tog fishing has been very good for anglers targeting tog on the mid and near shore wrecks up and down the coast. Crabs and sand fleas are the best baits when targeting blackfish.
Threshers will be making their way up the coast and should be found around the popular inshore spots chasing the bunker and bluefish schools.
Big bluefish have been caught off the surf and in the inlets off NJ, DE and OCMD.
As the water warms up over the next couple months we should see flounder reports starting to come in from inshore anglers.
Striper fishing off the coast of NY and NJ has been pretty good. Trolling, chunking, eeling and live lining are all producing fish.
Chesapeake Bay:
Trophy season for stripers on the Chesapeake Bay started on Saturday the 16th. I went out with some friends on the opening Saturday and the following Monday. We struggled to get bites with only one fish each day. Slow fishing seemed to be the norm from all of the reports we have been getting over the last couple of weeks.
This past week the bite further down the bay seems to have picked up. Charter boats from the Solomon's Island area have been having great days on these trophy stripers.
Some nice stripers have also been caught chumming around the Bay Bridge. Almost everyone trolls during trophy season, but chumming and jigging can produce fish as well!
White perch are being caught around the Bay Bridge pilings as well as in the rivers and tributaries.
Crabbing reports should start coming in from the lower bay rivers shortly!
Delaware Bay:
Striper fishing in the upper Delaware Bay and River has been pretty good. Fresh bunker is the key to getting bites. We have had a couple nice days on the river the last two weeks, but all of our fish have been in the release slot.
A few black drum have been caught off the surf in the lower bay. Anglers should begin targeting these big boomers at the popular DE and NJ spots in the lower bay. Fresh surf clams are usually the ticket for Black Drum.
Freshwater:
Trout fishing for stocked fish has been popular this past month. Nightcrawlers, and power bait are two of the more popular baits for trout fishing. Flies, and lures will also produce fish. Small inline spinners and spoons are my favorite.
Crappie fishing has been very good the last few weeks. Small spinners and spoons work well for these crappies as well as live minnows.
Fishing for pickerel and bass has also been very good the past few weeks.
Tight Lines,
Dave
