Late Report for last week as I was out of town! Action is heating up! See below.
Offshore Ocean:
The warm water has moved back into the area of the Baltimore Canyon! Mako's, yellowfin tuna and bluefin tuna should all be out there! Looks like some nice weather this coming week. We should see some boats making the run out after them!
Inshore Ocean:
Tog fishing is still very good up and down the coast. Offshore and midshore wrecks and reef sites are all producing fish.
I haven't heard any reports of Thresher's caught yet, but they should not be too far away!
Big blues are being caught in increasingly large numbers up and down the coast. Surf anglers, and jetty anglers are both finding the big bluefish as well as those fishing the inshore waters.
Striper fishing off the coast of NY and NJ has been very good this past week. Trolling, Jigging, Live Lining and chunking are all producing fish.
Chesapeake Bay:
Trophy season has been up and down so far this year. I have heard decent reports from lower bay captains and anglers. The mid and upper bay bite seems to be pretty hit or miss right now.
More captains are beginning to switch over to chumming early this year as it seems some nice fish have been taken by those anchoring over structure.
White perch are being caught around the Bay Bridge pilings as well as in the rivers and tributaries.
Delaware Bay:
Striper fishing in the upper Delaware Bay and River will start to wind down. Anglers are still catching nice fish in the upper Bay and River. Fresh bunker is the key to success. More and more smaller "schoolie" sized fish will be showing up.
Black drum have been caught both off the lower bay surf and by those fishing the popular lower bay areas by boat such as the coral beds off Slaughter Beach. Fresh surf clams are the best baits to use for these big bruisers. As the month of May moves on the bite should get even better for these big fish!
Freshwater:
Fishing for pickerel and bass has also been very good the past few weeks.
Crappies are still being caught. They tend to become more spread out as the water temps increase so you may need to do some searching to catch the same numbers as before.
There are still a good number of stocked trout in the local streams and rivers. Even though many anglers stop fishing for them after the first few weeks of the season, the fishing can be great after the crowds have died down and the fish aren't as spooked!
Tight Lines,
Dave
