The End of Hunting Season

This is truly one of my least favorite times of the year. Hunting season has closed (except for snow geese) and the fishing is slowly getting started. Even though I would much rather be in a duck blind or boat, now is the time to get everything organized, cleaned up and ready to go for next year. Sure it is much easier to throw all your muddy, broken, beat up decoys into storage and say "I've got a whole summer to worry about taking care of them," but many times we never get around to doing this and by the start of next hunting season we are rushing all over the place trying to get everything repaired, cleaned and in order. You may ask why not just do all this in the fall before hunting season? If you are just a hunter and dont fish that much or at all this may be a good time to do all these tedious chores. If you are like myself, fishing and crabbing and all those other summer outdoor activities are just as fun and important to me as hunting is and late summer and fall can be some of the best times of year for these activities and wasting days organizing your hunting gear takes away from days you can be outside fishing or crabbing etc.

For your decoys, make sure you wash all the mud and dirt off of them and store them in a dry place for the summer. It is no fun seeing those expensive decoys stained and faded by the next hunting season because of all the dirt and grime that sat on them all summer. Also it is inevitable that decoys will get banged up, scratched and even broken. Take this time to make those repairs and touch up any paint before you put them away.

This does not only apply to decoys and equipment. Now is also the time to go make those repairs to blinds, pits, stands etc.

Instead of waiting around for the fishing to heat up, take advantage of the time you have and get your hunting gear in order for next year.
