A Whitetail Buck Has No Appointments
October 22, 2012
A whitetail buck has no appointments; he’ll show up when he wants to and, if you’re a big game hunter, you owe it to yourself to be there!

In the eastern part of the country, the rut will begin soon—in a matter of days.   Whitetail bucks have kept a low profile for 11 ½  months, but they’ll be coming out of the woodwork soon..

I’ll sit all day with a bow hunter for the next 2 ½ weeks, trying to capture video of the huge autumn antlers traveling through the rolling fields and hard woods of PA and New Jersey. After years of making the same mistake by giving up too early mid-morning and going off to have breakfast at a local diner, I mended my ways in a few years back and began sticking it out all day.

I’ve noticed that during the rut many bucks move between the hours of 9 AM and 1 PM.  Most of the rutting activity goes on at night, under the cover of darkness. The bucks have exhausted themselves by sunup, burning up energy, chasing does, and attempting to breed. Right at daybreak many bucks rest for 2 or 3 hours recharging their batteries and getting their second wind, then mid-morning back on their feet rutting again or searching for females.

It’s hard to hunt all day both physically and mentally, it’s tough on your body but if you are up for the challenge, try it!

During the first two weeks in November, I have filmed some of the biggest bucks of the year just wandering around aimlessly on a bright sunny day at noon. That’s the power of the rut. Find yourself a great travel corridor near a thicket where does are bedding, or your favorite active ridge and hunt all day.

Pack a lunch and a snack and dig in all day. You never know, perhaps you’ll center-punch Mr. Big-head as he pays you a visit at the oddest time of the day.

Always wear your safety belt when tree stand hunting.   Best of luck! –Big Game Cameraman
Remember, when deer hunting  go in clean and come out quiet.

Share the tradition; take a youngster hunting or fishing!
