Ridge-runner
At this time in the season, all the trees still are in full leaf.
Locating deer in the woods can be very difficult.
While hunting properties which include high elevations
—ridges or hillsides, for example—I’ve noticed
that many bucks like to travel at a level about ¾ of the way
to the top. If they see danger, they can
quickly go over the top and down the other side.
I’ve had some successes by taking advantage of this
ridge-running preference.
If you decide to hunt on a ridge, you don’t want to be
above the buck; up there, you’ll certainly be skylined.
Try positioning yourself a little below the ¾ level
and you may be able to intercept a buck while he’s
wandering along the ridge or hillside.
At this time of year, the bachelor groups of bucks are breaking up.
Take full advantage of solo bucks ridge-running.
Think safety: When hunting from a tree stand, always wear your safety belt.
Remember: when deer hunting, go in clean and come out quiet.
Share the tradition. Take a youngster hunting or fishing!
