Thanksgiving Week Duck Hunts!

What a week of eating Thanksgiving dinners and duck hunting!

On Thanksgiving morning myself and a couple of friends went duck hunting down at our spot in central Delaware. My buddy brought his daughter along for her first duck hunt and she loved it! She is only in 2nd grade, so she was just observing, but got to see some ducks dive bomb the spread and really enjoyed it! We saw a ton of ducks but had trouble getting them to finish.

We shot 5 ducks, 2 mallards, 1 pintail, 1 wood duck and 1 gadwall. While out hunting I got a text from my father in law who was coming up later in the day and staying at our house overnight for a dinner on Black Friday that my wife and I were hosting. He asked if we could hunt on Friday morning. I am always down to duck hunt, so I told him as long as my wife is ok with it and doesn't need any help with getting dinner ready then we'll go. We got the green light so I recharged the mojo batteries and got ready for round 2!

During Black Friday's hunt we saw about the same number of ducks as the day before, the only difference was the ducks worked a lot better (more wind), but myself and my father-in-law had gun issues that hampered our performance. I could never get off my first shot. I would have to eject the first shell and the 2nd two would fire ok. Anyone know why this was happening? I have a Benelli Vinchi and can't figure out why it was doing this. My father-in-law's pump was not cycling the 3rd shell into the chamber, so he would get off the first 2 shots but not the 3rd. After the hunt while cleaning his gun he found the plug was cracked in half affecting the spring that chambers the shells. The good news was my buddy Mark who also came with us had a gun that acted correctly. We ended the day with 9 ducks, 8 mallards and 1 black duck.

On Saturday I had planned to take my wife out duck hunting. She had gone goose hunting with me once before but never duck hunting. We dropped our son off at my parents house, my dad came with us and my mom enjoyed her mom-mom time with our 4 month old to herself for an afternoon. We met my cousin and his son at the pit around noon. They were already set up and had 1 duck on the ground already. I gave my wife a few pointers and we got settled in. We saw plenty of ducks but had trouble getting them to finish. Many circled and circled but just wouldn't give us that good shot. We did end up getting 4 on the ground and my wife was mad because I "robbed" her of a duck, shooting one she was just getting ready to pull the trigger on, but she had a blast and enjoyed the afternoon in the pit and getting to see our dog retrieve all the ducks.
