Walleye Fishing 3/2/15
Once we got a little bit of light, we pushed off and headed out of the creek. After a rough start, losing a rod overboard (which we got back thankfully) and running aground due to the low water conditions (right as we were leaving the creek) we finally made our way out and started setting the spread.
We set the first planer line out and as I was setting the 2nd, the first line popped and it was fish on! My buddy Marty brought a nice 7lb walleye to the boat and we quickly had one in the box.
After our hot start, things got quiet for us. We kept trolling around and made a slight move. After this move we hooked into and landed a nice pike.
With it being 10am and us not having too much action we decided to run back to the marina real quick to check into our cabin. We had to do this between 10am and 4pm and we didn't want to restrict how long we could fish to in the afternoon.
When we came back out of the creek we noticed the wind really picking up. We decided to make a move to a more protected area. We reset the spread and began searching for more walleyes. After about an hour we had a planer board rod fire and it was fish on again! While fighting this fish another planer rod went off and we were doubled up! My buddy Walt, also of The Mid-Atlantic Sportsman, was connected to his first walleye. He got him to the back of the boat and I slipped the net under another nice 6-7lb walleye. Marty was on the other rod, which turned out to be a nice 2-3lb smallmouth that was released.
After a quick reset, we circled around and it was game on again with another double! Christian took the first rod which turned out to be another nice walleye. Marty reeled in the 2nd which was another smallmouth that we released.
We trolled around for another hour or two before heading in for the day. It was a lot of fun and very productive for our first time trolling Lake Ontario in my own boat.
Trout Fishing 3/3/15
On Sunday we pushed off a little later in the am and made our way back to the walleye grounds. After trolling for an hour or so with no action and my low oil light coming on on the boat we decided to run back into the marina, get some oil and then switch to brown trout fishing. After getting our oil and adding some gas to the tank we made a run out around Stony Point looking for some browns.
As soon as we set up we had action going 1 for 4 (I know not a good average), but the only fish we landed was a small, but legal, 15-1/2" brown trout. After trolling for another 3 hours with nothing to show we made a move to the "High Rocks." As I was setting the last planer board rod in the clip I felt something hit the lure but miss, fortunately this fish came back and it was game on! After a nice fight we had a nice 7-8lb laker at the back of the boat and in the net that I reeled in.
We reset that planer line and kept trolling the area. Not long after another planer line got hit and Marty reeled in another laker of around the same size. This laker took a Mid-Atlantic Sportsman trolling spoon in Green/Silver/Chartreuse.
The next bite we had was our first bite off the downrigger. I could tell this was a nicer fish after a couple of runs and some nice headshakes. Walt did a great job fighting this fish and I slipped the net under a nice 10+lb laker. This fish took a Mid-Atlantic Sportsman trolling spoon in Green/Chartreuse.
After resetting the downrigger rod we trolled around with a brief lull, but before too long the downrigger rod fired again and Christian brought another feisty laker to the net. This fish hit the same Mid-Atantic Sportsman trolling spoon in Green/Chartreuse that Walt's hit.
It was an awesome weekend fishing with some good friends and meeting some new ones! Can't wait to get back up there to fish some more!
