Offshore Ocean:
Offshore fishing is in a transition phase right now. There are still some yellowfin and a decent number of bigeye being caught trolling in the canyons. Bluefin and yellowfin are being reported at the inshore locations, and the tuna chunking bite is starting to get under way. I have heard most success coming during the day for those tuna chunking. Night time chunking should start to pick up as well.
We are starting to see more white and blue marlin being caught. With tournament time quickly approaching many anglers will switch their focus from tuna to billfish.
Mahi and wahoo are also being caught in the local canyons. Action on wahoo should pick up as we get later in the summer.
Makos and various other sharks (tigers, hammerheads etc) are being caught by those sharking at night in the canyons.
Deep droppers are still catching tile fish in good numbers.
Inshore Ocean:
Flounder fishing remained good the past couple of weeks. Some days boats are limiting out and some days they are struggling to put decent catches together.
Sea bass fishing has been fair. Lots of throwbacks are being reported and finding keepers can be difficult some days.
Thresher action off of NJ, NY and further north has been good for the inshore sharkers. Brown sharks, duskies and other sharks are also being caught.
Cobia are still hanging around inshore off OCMD, DE and Southern NJ. Keep a bucktail rigged and ready to go in case you see one hanging around while out fishing!
Chesapeake Bay:
Really no change to the Chesapeake report this week. Some spanish macks have been caught in the southern parts of the bay.
Schoolie stripers remained the main focus of anglers fishing the Chesapeake last week. Trolling, and chumming are both producing. Jigging and casting artificials is also producing some action on these rockfish. Live lining should pick up when more spot show up.
Remember the regulations changed this year. You may now keep 2 stripers over 20" and only 1 of those 2 can be over 28" per person.
Bottom fishing reports should start coming in, in better numbers from lower bay anglers as the perch, croakers, and spot become more prevalent.
Crabbing was ok this past week. I heard decent reports from Mid Bay rivers such as the Wye. Hopefully we see a better crabbing season this year as the last couple years have been tough!
Delaware Bay:
Flounder fishing has picked up the last couple weeks in the bay. Lower bay and mid bay anglers are reporting decent action on flounder.
Brown sharks are still tearing up tackle for those bottom fishing in the bay. These fish can be fun to catch but are big time tackle busters.
Kingfish, croakers and sea trout are also being caught by those bottom fishing in the bay.
Freshwater:
Freshwater fishing is in the summer routine. Early morning and late evenings are prime times for bass, and pickerel. The key to catching fish all day is to fish under heavy cover slowly during the heat of the day.
Tight Lines,
Dave
