The daytime yellowfin chunk bite has picked up this past week in the "southern" canyons. Anglers out of OCMD, and IRI, DE reported good action chunking for these tuna in the daytime. Sharks are making it hard to get some of this fish to the boat in one piece. Bigeyes are still being caught on the troll. Early am or late pm are still the best times to get a bigeye to bite.
Marlin fishing has also been very good. White and blue marlin are both being caught in good numbers. Reports will get harder to find during the next months of tournaments, but fishing should stay good throughout September for billfish.
Mahi are providing steady action for anglers inshore and out in the canyons. More and more wahoo are also being caught.
Deep droppers are still catching tile fish in good numbers.
Inshore Ocean:
Flounder fishing has been up and down the past week. Having good conditions (the right drift and amount of current) is key to putting a good catch together.
Sea bass fishing has been fair, there are still a lot of shorts being caught, but some nice keepers are also finding their way into coolers.
Inshore sharking action is very good. It may be hard to find a thresher or mako in the warming water, but some should still be around. Spinner sharks, black tips, brown sharks, duskies, hammerheads and more will all be caught by inshore sharkers as well. Many of these species are protected and must be released right away.
Cobia are still hanging around inshore off OCMD, DE and Southern NJ. Keep a bucktail rigged and ready to go in case you see one hanging around while out fishing!
Chesapeake Bay:
Really no change to the Chesapeake report this week. Some spanish macks have been caught in the southern parts of the bay.
Jigging, chumming, trolling and live lining stripers are all producing fish this past week.
Remember the regulations changed this year. You may now keep 2 stripers over 20" and only 1 of those 2 can be over 28" per person.
Bottom fishing reports for croakers have picked up this past week. This is a good fishery to introduce young anglers to as action is usually fast and furious.
Crabbing seemed to pick up a bit this past week. Mid bay rivers on both sides of the bay reported good catches with both trot lines and pull pots producing.
Delaware Bay:
Flounder fishing in the bay was good this past week. Fishing channel edges and bottom structure will produce the most fish. Traditional flounder rigs as well as bucktails with gulp and other strip baits should all produce catches of flatties.
Brown sharks are still tearing up tackle for those bottom fishing in the bay. These fish can be fun to catch but are big time tackle busters.
Kingfish, croakers and sea trout are also being caught by those bottom fishing in the bay.
Freshwater:
Freshwater fishing is in the summer routine. Early morning and late evenings are prime times for bass, and pickerel. The key to catching fish all day is to fish under heavy cover slowly during the heat of the day.
