The Maryland trophy striper season is less than 2 weeks away. Opening day is scheduled for April 20th, 2013.
I am expecting a better trophy striper season this year for a couple of reasons.
1st, the winter we had this year was much colder temperature wise, and the temperatures in March and even now in early April are colder than the last couple of Springs. One of the complaints with last Spring was the warm temperatures caused an early spawn for a lot of the big stripers in the Chesapeake and many feel a good portion of fish spawned and left before the opener.
2nd, the lack of snow and rain in recent months may be good for fishing. I fish mostly above the bay bridge out of Rock Hall and the last couple of seasons have been poor. One big reason I believe the fishing has been so poor is the terrible water clarity from all the runoff and snow melting. With better water clarity, the fishing up and down the bay should improve.
One big issue with fishing the early part of the trophy season, especially opening day, is safety. There are a ton of boats out there many fishing planer boards. Please be cautious and courteous to others. If you are unfarmiliar with running a boat in this type of situation please have someone else at the controls. It can be like a maze out there sometimes and you need to be alert the whole time.
If you need to stock up on trophy striper tackle, check out the product review I did on Shore to Shore Tackle. You can read that here. Pick up a couple of tandems and maybe an umbrella from these guys. You wont be disapointed, they flat out catch fish!
Tight Lines,
Dave
