Baltimore Canyon Report - 6/21/13

On Friday myself and friends Dan, Mike and Shane took a trip out to the Baltimore Canyon on Mike's 27' Center Console "Fish Tank"

We got a little bit of a late start leaving at 5:30, but by 6:00am we were heading out of OC inlet and on our way. We were met with a little bit of a confused sea. The east winds had us running into a slight chop with a 4'-5' roller mixed in every couple of minutes. We finally made it out to the Baltimore and dropped the lines in around 60 fathoms near the tip at 9:00am.

We heard on the radio of the good morning bite, and at 10:30am we had our first shot of fish when two rods went down. My buddy Dan caught his first yellowfin which weighed in around 20#'s this fish took a blue/white skirted ballyhoo. Shane was on the rod for the second fish which took a black and purple spreader bar. This fish ended up breaking off so we only went 1 for 2.

After this the radio chatter quieted down and it seemed the bite had died. Around 1:30pm the pink skirted ballyhoo behind a pink bird down the center went off and I went to work on this fish. After a short fight we got him next to the boat and saw this was a nicer class fish. It decided to save its fight for this moment and took a couple runs right under the boat. I got him up next to the boat again and Shane stuck him with the gaff. This fish weighed in at 62#'s back at the dock!

After resetting the lines another fish blew up on the purple and black spreader bar, but missed the hook. We continued working the area for another hour or so and called it a day. The ride in was a lot smoother and we made it back to OC in just over 2 hours.
